Designing for Adaptive Futures: Exploring Human-AI Collaboration in Sustainable Floating Cities

Team: Helena Kaufmann, Karl Hacker, Vanessa Gehringer, Anna Hwang, Keisha Zanichelli

Set in Jakarta and Dhaka's floating districts of 2070, this project explores a nomadic floating city network where learning replaces currency. It introduces the Lumen Loop, an emotional-cognitive bracelet companion that visualizes mental states using color patterns to align rhythms and encourage empathy.

Future Context (2070)

By 2070, coastal regions have been submerged under rising oceans, forcing the emergence of self-sustaining, nomadic floating cities. In these environments, traditional currency is replaced by shared learning and civic contribution. Modern nomads face the constant challenge of integrating into diverse, moving communities.

Speculative Intervention

The Lumen Loop is an emotional-cognitive companion bracelet designed to support reflection and empathy. It visualizes the wearer's mental and emotional states using gentle color hues and sound, avoiding ranking or evaluation. When two wearers interact, their loops briefly synchronize to establish visual attunement and build trust.
